East coast 'boxing

We recently took a vacation and did some letterboxing along the way! States we boxed in were Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. For a full list of our find and attempts, click here.

We really did do too much boxing to sum up; it would take pages and pages. So, some of the highlights included:

In Ohio, getting the Kumbaya box from Doodle and Deedle Bug, who we know from the list.

SilentDoug’s Mystery of Bull Hill had a fun set of clues... and it was neat to get a bit of a boxing “celebrity.”

The Spring is Here series in NY, which was planted for a gathering, had some of the prettiest stamps of the trip.

The Old-NewGate Prison series in CT had one of the most, er, uphill hikes we have ever done.

Alice in Orleans on Cape Cod had the most intricate, beautifully carved stamps we had ever seen. We were very sad that we couldn’t find The White Rabbit in this series.

B discovered that if you leave the compass in your shorts’ pockets and then run it through the washer and dryer, the compass will no longer point north.

J discovered that hiking in flip-flops over the very rocky terrain in CT equals stubbed toes and dirty feet!

It was also interesting to note some of the regional differences in letterboxing. Clues were much more likely to define a pace as two steps. The terrain was so rocky in that the ‘find’ location was more often than not a pile of rocks (unlike Michigan, where it is most often a stump or tree). And many of the clues were more ‘directional’ and less ‘cluey’ than many Michigan letterboxes... but that may have been due to the boxes we picked.

All in all, we had a great time. Here are a few photos of us letterboxing in CT (click to make bigger):
